SCORE

Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 86-84

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt held off the Briar Cliff Chargers in the closing moments and won a two-point decision on the road Wednesday night to advance to the GPAC Semifinals on Saturday.

The Defenders had to survive an onslaught by Jackson Lamb as he knocked down seven three-point baskets for 21 of Briar Cliff’s first 25 points and the Chargers were up 28-17 after an 11-0 run.

Dordt came back with a pair of free throws to stop the run and took a brief 31-30 lead after a Cooper Ross basket with 2:01 left in the half. The score was tied again at 33 after Zach Bussard converted two free throws but Briar Cliff ended the half with a 5-0 run and led 38-33 at the break.

A basket by Briar Cliff to start the second half put them up 40-33 but Dordt embarked on an 8-0 run with Jesse Jansma converting a three and a two and Alec Henrickson had a three-point basket in the run as well. With the momentum gathering, Dordt pushed the lead all the way to ten on a Bussard basket before extending the lead to as many as 11 at 74-63 on yet another Bussard basket.  The junior proved to be a difficult match up for the Chargers as he scored 20 points after the break.

The hosts answered with an 8-0 run over the next 90 seconds and trailed 74-71.  Briar Cliff looked poised to steal the decision as it took a 79-78 lead with 2:36 left but the Defenders were resilient with Bussard converting an old-fashioned three-point play for an 81-79 lead. Briar Cliff got the lead back as Jay Wolfe went for a three-point play of his own. A pair of Bussard free throws followed to put Dordt up 83-82 but Wolfe answered again with a two.

With :16 left Jesse Jansma was fouled as he set a screen and he made both free throws for an 85-84 advantage.  Briar Cligg got the ball to Wolfe again but he was called for steps with :05 remaining and Jansma was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play.  Jansma made one of two free throws for the 86-84 lead.

Briar Cliff had just enough time to inbound to Wolfe who raced the length of the floor and missed a contested lay up at the buzzer as Dordt preserved the win.
