Dordt defeats Northwestern 5-3

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt never trailed and held on for a 5-3 win over Northwestern in game one of their doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26 in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Defenders got out of a jam in the second inning when Northwestern had a runner thrown out at third base with one out and left another runner on third base as the inning came to a close.

Dordt scored two runs on three hits and an error in the second inning with Brooklyn Van Oort doubling in a run and Natalie Vos had a sacrifice fly that scored another. 

Northwestern threatened again in the third inning but they stranded a runner at third base again as Emily Bosch was caught stealing to end the inning.

Both teams had chances to score in the next frames as Dordt left two stranded in the third and Northwestern left two on in the fourth and had another runner thrown out at home plate on a grounder to third.

The hosts added two in the fifth for a 4-0 lead as they took advantage of two errors and a couple of hits. De Roin had a sacrifice fly for one run and Natalie Vos singled in Van Oort for the second run.

Northwestern managed to make it close with three runs in the sixth inning on four hits but the inning ended with the potential tying run getting thrown out at home.

Leading 4-3, Dordt got a run for insurance when Marissa Vanden Berg scored on an error.  

Northwestern got one runner on in the seventh inning but Tianna Soodsma was able to work around the runner on second to end the game. 

DORDT NUMBERS

Hailey Heeringa was 2-4 and Natalie Vos was 2-2 with each getting a pair of singles. Vos knocked in two runs.

Brooklyn Van Oort had Dordt’s only extra base hit.

Five different players scored a run for Dordt.

Marissa VandenBerg, Jessica Oules, Rachel Evavold, Carley De Roin and Abby Smith all had singles for Dordt.

Tianna Soodsma was the winning pitcher and struck out two with two bases on balls and had 11 hits with three earned runs given up. 

Soodsma is 4-2 on the mound. 

COMPARISONS

Dordt was outhit 11-10.

Northwestern committed four errors.  Three of Dordt’s runs were unearned.
