Dordt def. Briar Cliff 3-2 (8 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender softball team evened its GPAC record at 9-9 and moved a win within .500 overall in taking a 3-2 win from Briar Cliff in a GPAC sweep in Sioux Center on Wednesday, April 24.
Dordt broke a scoreless tie with a Brooklyn Van Oort double that scored Carley De Roin in the bottom of the fourth inning. The visitors wasted no time and tied the game with a run on two hits in the top of the fifth but left two runners on base. Neither team scored again until a Hailey Heeringa double scored Rachel Evavold in the bottom of the sixth.
Clinging to the lead Dordt was unable to close the door as Briar Cliff tied it with a two-out rally with a single and a double but couldn’t get a go-ahead run in.
Dordt threatened with a pair of two out singles but couldn’t win it in regulation. Briar Cliff had a threat of its own in the top of the eighth but a runner was stranded at third when the inning ended on a ground out to the pitcher’s mound.
Dordt ended it with a run in the eighth as Rachel Evavold started the inning with a single and was bunted over by Hailey Heeringa. Carley De Roin then ended it with a single that plated Evavold.
Evavold was the winner with two runs allowed on six hits with five strikeouts and two bases on balls.
Evavold was 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored and Jessica Oules had two singles and a stolen base.
Dordt outhit Briar Cliff 10-6.
Dordt will host Jamestown on Friday, April 26 starting at 4:00.
Dordt is 9-9 overall and 17-18 overall. Briar Cliff is 9-27 overall and 4-16 in the GPAC.
