The Dordt College softball team defeated Presentation 7-5 in the opening day of the 2019 season.
The Defenders struck right away in the top of the first thanks to a Carley De Roin double to left-center that scored Jessica Oules.
Tianna Soodsma got the start on the mound for Dordt and got out of the first inning unscathed.
Neither team managed any runs in the second or third innings. Both Soodsma and Presentation starter Bibiana Velleda forced batters into several easy plays for the defense.
Dordt's Hailey Heeringa stole home in the fourth inning to stretch the Defender lead to two. Brooklyn Van Noort was threatening at second, but was left stranded.
Presentation managed four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead midway through the game.
The Defenders responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth to tie things at four. Hope Veldkamp scored off of an Erin Bredemus single and Erin Bredemus scored on a Heeringa sacrifice fly.
Sierra Kilmer scored for the Saints in the bottom of the fifth to help Presentation take a 5-4 lead.
Three runs by the Defenders over the final two innings secured the victory. Abby Smith scored on a Bredemus grounder in the sixth. The two runs in the seventh came courtesy of a home run by De Roin and a sacrifice fly by Natalie Vos that scored Van Noort.
Presentation mustered one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
Soodsma pitched six and a third innings and gave up three earned runs.
De Roin led Dordt with two RBI.
