Dordt def. St. Xavier 5-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt softball team ended its Arizona trip with a 5-3 win over St. Xavier (Illinois) on Friday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Defenders scored a run in the third to tie the game and took the lead with a run in the home half of the fourth inning. The run in the third came on a Hailey Heeringa single that plated Jessica Oules. The run in the fourth came when pinch runner Hope Veldkamp scored on a Natalie Vos single for a 2-1 lead.
St. Xavier came back with two in the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead and that lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when Kenzie Cunard walked to start the inning. After a flyball out Hailey Heeringa singled to centerfield. A popout put Dordt on the brink of a loss by Janae Wynja slammed a three-run homerun for the dramatic 5-3 win.
Dordt had a 12-10 hits advantage and overcame two errors to preserve the win.
Marissa Vanden Berg, Heeringa, Erin Bredemus and Jessica Oules all had two hits in the win with Carley De Roin, Bredemus and Wynja accounting for three extra base hits with a double, double and homerun respectively.
Natalie Vos was the winning pitcher with three earned runs allowed on ten hits with two strikeouts and two bases on balls.
Dordt returns to Sioux Center with a 6-9 mark.
