Basketball Faces Northwestern Wednesday

GAMETIME…

Dordt will travel to Orange City, Iowa to face Northwestern in women’s and men’s basketball on Wednesday, November 28. THE FOE…

The Northwestern women are 7-1 this season and 3-1 in GPAC play. Northwestern’s loss is to Dakota Wesleyan by a 76-73 margin.  The Wesleyan contest is the only game Northwestern has been involved in where the margin is less than 12.

Chris Yaw’s team is averaging 90.3 points per game and allow 65.1.  The Raiders are also outrebounding teams 43-28 and convert 50 percent of their field goals while limiting opponents to 40 percent success.  Northwestern is also converting 40 percent its three-point shots while defending the arc for 31 percent success.

Kassidy De Jong leads the team with a 19.6 points per game average to go with 8.0 rebounds and she has nearly three assists per game. Darbi Gustafson is scoring 19.0 points per game with 8.6 rebounds to top the team and she is making 58.4 percent of her field goals.  Haley Birks is good for 14.4 points per game and four rebounds and Sammy Blum is adding 9.6 and Alexis Toering 8.9. Gustafson, Birks and De Jong have all scored over 1000 career points.

The Northwestern men are 6-4 this season and 1-2 in GPAC play with a win over Mount Marty and losses to Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside. The Raiders opened the season with three straight wins and then went 1-4 before back to back wins this past weekend over St. Xavier and Trinity Christian in games played at Chicago.

Northwestern is averaging 92.9 points per game and allowing 78.8 while outrebounding teams 43.5-31.6. Northwestern makes 51 percent of its shots and 40.9 percent of its three-point shots while teams are making 42.8 percent against them.

Trent Hilbrands is scoring 17.9 points per game and Jay Small is at 13.9 points per contest.  Small has 30 made three-point baskets to lead the Raiders in that category and is converting 42.3 percent of his three-point shots. Parker Mulder and Steven Kragt add 9.6 and 9.5 points per game and Grant Roher is at 8.2 points per game. Mulder leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game and is second on the team with 3.3 assists per game. Hilbrands tops the team with 3.7 assists per game.

DEFENDER NOTES…

Dordt’s women are 7-2 this season and 2-2 in the GPAC.  Morningside handed Dordt its first loss of the season on November 10 after the Defenders started the season 5-0 and Dakota Wesleyan nipped the Defenders by four the next game.  Dordt got back to its winning ways with an 82-62 victory over the College of Saint Mary Flames and then added an 89-62 win over Dakota State on November 20 in its last outing.`

Dordt’s women are averaging 85 points per game and limit teams to 66 points per outing.  Dordt also has a 48-36 rebounding advantage and has converted 46.8 percent of its field goals and 36 percent of its three-point shots.

Erika Feenstra averages 23.7 points per game and takes in 8.4 rebounds and she is making 63.2 percent of her field goals. Annie Rhinesmith averages 14.1 points per game with 5.4 rebounds with five assists. Payton Harmsen is scoring 10.4 points per outing and Rachel Evavold is at 10.0 points per game with 7.3 rebounds. Rhinesmith and Harmsen convert 42 and 40 percent of their three-point shots and have made 20 and 28 respectively.  Siennah Stamness and Ebby Prewitt average 5.4 and 4.3 points per game respectively.

The Defender men are 8-2 this season and 2-1 in the GPAC.  Dordt’s loss in league play is to Morningside and its other loss is a loss to Graceland.

Dordt is outscoring teams 83-75 and has a 42.2-35.2 rebounding edge. Dordt’s converting 46.7 percent of its field goals and 37.5 percent of its three-point shots while limiting opponents to 41.9 percent field goal success.

Jesse Jansma scores 15.3 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and he has madde a team high 18 three-point shots and is converting 46.3 percent of his three-point shots. Garrett Franken scores 14.6 points and grabs 7.7 rebounds. Chad Barkema and Josh Van Lingen have 12.1 and 10.9 points per game averages and Van Lingen has a 5.6 rebounds per game average. Barkema is making 60.5 percent of his field goals and Van Lingen 50.6.  Ben Gesink is at 11.0 points per game and Alec Henrickson is at 8.2. Chandler Brunsting is good for 3.0 assists per game and 5.8 points and Alec Henrickson is adding 8.2 points per game. Henrickson has 1,131 career points and is closing in on 200 made three-point baskets with 190.

LAST TIME…

The Northwestern women were 86-58 winners over Waldorf on Tuesday night, November 20 after leading 48-31 at halftime. Gustafson had 21 points and De Jong 17.  Birks and Toering had 12 and 11 points respectively as Northwestern converted 52.9 percent of its field goals and had a 41-24 rebounding advantage.

The Dordt women beat Dakota State 89-62 on November 20 behind a 32 point outing from Erika Feenstra and she had 13 rebounds and two steals. Annie Rhinesmith added 10 points and five rebounds and Mya Chmielewski had eight points.

The Northwestern men were 89-73 winners over Trinity Christian on Saturday after leading 56-41 at halftime. Christian Korver scored 20 off the bench and was 6-9 from the three-point line and Rohrer added 18 with ten rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. Hilbrands and Small had 14 and 12 and Isaac Heyer had seven rebounds and six assists.

Jesse Jansma scored a career high 29 points on Saturday and helped the Defenders to a 94-85 win over Wartburg on Saturday night in Waverly, Iowa. Jansma also had eight rebounds and seven assists. Bussard had 16 and Franken 14 as the Defenders converted 48 percent of their field goals and outrebounded Wartburg 42-38.

HISTORY…

Dordt and Northwestern played three times last season with Northwestern winning 73-68 on December 6 and 101-61 on January 31 in Sioux Center. The teams played in the quarterfinal round of the GPAC tournament on February 21 and Northwestern pulled away from a 52-49 third quarter lead to win 75-64 in Orange City. Erika Feenstra had 17 with six rebounds and Rachel Evavold had 16 points with four rebounds. Northwestern was led by Renee Maneman with 25 points and Kassidy De Jong had 15 with 15 rebounds and Gustafson added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwestern’s men won both meetings last season with a wild 116-111 overtime win in Orange City on December 6 and then took a 96-92 win on January 31 in Sioux Center. Colton Kooima had 23 in the January meeting and Nathan Wedel had 20 points and five assists. Chandler Brunsting had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Bussard had 17 while going 6-6 from the field.

NAIA POLL…

The GPAC has five teams in the top-25 in the women’s preseason poll released on October 23. Concordia is no. 1 and Dakota Wesleyan no. 2 while Northwestern is no. 8 and Morningside is in the no. 11 spot. Hastings enters the season at no. 13 and GPAC newcomer Jamestown is no. 16.

The men’s preseason poll features three GPAC teams in the top-25 with Morningside at no. 4 and Briar Cliff at no. 10.  Dakota Wesleyan is no. 17 and Doane is in the receiving votes category of the poll released on October 23. Indiana Wesleyan is no. 1 to start the season.

NEXT…

Dordt is at home on Saturday, December 1 against Jamestown while Northwestern will host Briar Cliff on Saturday as well.
