Basketball Plays Games In Orange City

GAMETIME…

Dordt will travel to Orange City to play a pair of women’s and men’s basketball games on Friday and Saturday, December 28 and 29.  The Friday games begin at 2:00 with the women facing Dakota State and the men follow at 4:00 against Viterbo.  On Saturday the women will play Trinity Christian at noon followed by the men facing Friends at 2:00. THE FOES…

The Dakota State Lady T’s are 1-10 this season and have played one game in the North Star Athletic Association and dropped that game with Bellevue. The Madison, South Dakota team has a win over Trinity Bible College to its credit and has gone 0-8 against Great Plains Athletic Conference teams this season. Three of the Lady T’s losses have been by single digits.

Jessi Giles leads the team with 10.4 points per game and she is grabbing 3.6 rebounds per game. McKenzie Hermanson and Alexis Robson is good for 7.9 and 7.6 points per game. Hermanson leads the team with 24 made three-point baskets and Ashlyn Macdonald gets 4.9 rebounds per game. The Lady T’s are getting outscored 83.6-63.4 and outrebounded 42.7-33.9.   Teams are shooting for 47.2 percent success against the Dakota State while limiting David Moe’s team to 36.9 percent success.

Trinity Christian is 2-13 this season and stand 0-7 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Trolls took wins over Cornerstone and Lincoln to start the season but have lost 13 in a row since and have struggled to keep games close with all but one of those losses coming by double digits.

Bill DeRuiter’s team is averaging 60.8 points per game while allowing 83.1.  The Trolls get outrebounded 48.9-37.3 and allow teams to convert 42.5 percent of their field goal attempts while converting 35.9 percent themselves.  The Trolls have struggled from the three-point line with 25.4 percent success. Jasmine Elliott has a 19.2 points per game average but has played in just six games, missing games from November 3-28. Breanna Toppen is good for 12.3 points per game and has a team high 33 assists in 15 games played. Aubrey Goorman is good for 10.6 points per game and Kyla Pitts scores 9.1 points per game. Toppen leads the team with 35 made three-point baskets and is converting 32.4 percent of her tries. Elliott has made 7-14 three-point shots this season.

Viterbo is 8-5 this season and 1-0 in North Star Athletic Association play. The V-Hawks beat Northwestern on November 20 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin and beat Waldorf on December 3 in their only North Star league game. The V-Hawks have played a schedule heavy on NCAA Division III opponents and have gone 4-2 against NAIA teams. Wayne Wagner’s team played Wartburg earlier this season and lost 71-54 to the Knights one week before Dordt faced the Waverly, Iowa team.

Viterbo is scoring 74.9 points per game and allow 72.7. Viterbo is outrebounding teams 36.5-35.8 and are converting 46.3 percent of their field goals. Jason Tichy is good for 15.8 points per game with 32 made three-point shots and he makes 37.2 percent of his three-point tries. Cade Anderson is good for 11.2 points per game and is the leading rebounder with an 8.2 average. Jake Schroeckenthaler is scoring 11.1 points per game off the bench and Jezzriah Burton is good for 10.4 points per game.

Friends is 8-4 this season and 6-3 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Falcons started the season with two wins over Hastings and Bellevue and stood 4-4 after eight games. From that point on November 29 the Falcons have won four games in a row.

Jordan Murdock leads the team with 28.9 points per game and gets 8.4 rebounds per game.  He’s converting 50.4 percent of his field goals and 30 percent of his three-point shots. Murdock also leads the team with 61 assists. James Conley is good for 16.8 points per game with 45.5 percent three-point shooting and he leads the team with 30 made three-point shots. Atir Cherne and Vernon Vaughn are each averaging 12.2 and 10.9 points per game and Zion Fralin is good  for 10.0 points per game.

Friends is averaging 92.3 points per game with 83.8 points allowed. The Falcons hold a slight 37-36 rebounding edge but surrender 48 percent shooting while converting 47.6.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside.  The Defenders earned an overtime win over Midland on December 15 to bounce back from a two-point loss on the road to Bellevue.  These two games will be Dordt’s final non-conference games of the season.

Dordt is averaging 85.4 points per game with a 70.9 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46-36 and are converting 45.9 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.4 percent success for opponents. Dordt is averaging six more free throws per game than opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 25.1 points per game with 63.9 percent field goal shooting and she gets 8.5 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 14.2 points per game and she is making 36 percent of her three-point shots and has made 32 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 11.3 points per game and 7.5 rebounds and she is making 55 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 9.3 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.3 with Kenzie Bousema at 6.1. Harmsen leads the team with 36 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages just under six assists per game.

The Defender men are 10-5 this season and 4-4 in GPAC play. The Defenders have league losses to Northwestern, Jamestown, Briar Cliff and Morningside and bounced back from three straight losses to win a pair before Christmas over Hastings and Midland.

Dordt is outscoring teams 82.1-77.4 and outrebound teams 41.9-36.3. Dordt has shot 45.7 percent from the field and allow teams to make 43.4.

Jesse Jansma is scoring 13.8 points per game and has made a team high 27 three-point shots. Garrett Franken is scoring 13.5 points per game with 7.7 rebounds. Chad Barkema and Josh Van Lingen have scored 12.1 and 11.8 points per game respectively and take in 5.7 and 5.3 rebounds each. Barkema is making 56.9 percent of his field goal attempts. Zach Bussard is scoring 9.3 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and Alec Henrickson is good for 8.6 points per game and Ben Gesink is at 7.7. Chandler Brunsting leads the team with 3.5 assists per game and Henrickson has converted 26 three-point shots.

LAST TIME…

The Dordt women beat Midland 94-93 in overtime on December 15 with Rhinesmith scoring 26 and Erika Feenstra added 22 while Evavold scored 16. Rhinesmith added four three-point shots and had six rebounds and nine assists.

Dakota State lost to Jamestown on December 17, 100-41. Patton scored ten for the Lady T’s as Dakota State trailed 47-22 at halftime.

The Trolls lost to Florida College on December 19 with Goorman scoring 20 and Toppen tossed in 16.  Trinity Christian was down 49-32 at halftime.

The Dordt men beat Midland 83-80 on Saturday, December 15 with Franken, Jansma and Van Lingen all scoring 18 and Barkema had 14. Van Lingen grabbed six rebounds and Brunsting and Cooper Ross each had four assists.

Viterbo faced Mount Mercy on December 18 and lost a 102-85 decision with Schroeckenthaler scoring 21 off the bench on 9-13 shooting and Anderson scored 17 and Tichy added 16.  Viterbo was down 46-35 at halftime.

Friends beat Bethany (Kansas) on December 15 90-84 with Murdock going for 35 and ten rebounds. Conley added 12 as Friends had a 43-27 halftime lead and held on as Bethany outscored the Falcons 56-46 in the second half.

The Defenders return to GPAC play on Wednesday, January 2 at home against Concordia. The women’s game starts at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00.
