Basketball Hosts Two Saturday

GAMETIME…

Dordt will host the College of Saint Mary and Nebraska Christian on Saturday,  January 20 in a GPAC women’s game and a non-conference men’s game. The women’s game will start at 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at www.kdcr885.com. THE FOE…

The College of Saint Mary Flames are 2-18 this season and 1-12 in the GPAC and have lost nine games in a row dating back to a win over Doane on November 28. 

The Flames are led by Trista Merrival’s 11.4 points per game and Corryne Millett is good for 10.6 while Alyssa Laudato is at 10.1.  The Flames leading rebounder is Millett and Carlson at 5.9 each and Millett is the leader in shooting from the field with a 42.6 percent success rate. Lynsey Curran has converted 48 three-point shots and Merrival has 37—both are converting just under 36 percent of their long shots.

The Flames allow 80.8 points per game and score 60.7 while getting outrebounded 44.1-33.2.  Teams are making 45 percent of their shots against the Flames and the Omaha, Nebraska based school is making 36.8 percent of its shots.

Nebraska Christian is 10-9 this season and had a four game winning streak stopped on Wednesday night in a 90-50 decision with Mount Marty. The Sentinels have played three GPAC teams and are 1-2 against Concordia (94-67 loss), Mount Marty (88-83 win) and Morningside (90-50 loss).

Willie Williams’s team is getting outscored 82.6-82 and have outrebounded teams 36.4-34.8.  The Sentinels are making 46.7 percent of their shots and 37.8 percent of their three-point baskets. 

DJ Hanes tops the team with a 28.6 points per game average and is making 51 percent of his field goals and 43 percent of his three-point shots. Drue Aguilera adds 9.5 points per game and Devin Jones is good for 7.8 and TJ Rivera is at 7.3 points per game.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are 16-6 overall and 9-5 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan (twice) and Morningside (twice). 

Dordt is averaging 83.9 points per game with a 71.0 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.5-36.1 and are converting 44.6 percent of its field goals while allowing 38.2 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 23.3 points per game with 62 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.8 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.7 points per game and she is making 32.5 percent of her three-point shots and has made 38 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 11.9 points per game and 7.0 rebounds and she is making 51.8 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 8.2 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.4 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.1 points per game average. Harmsen leads the team with 47 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 4.8 assists per game.

The Defender men are 14-8 this season and 7-6 in GPAC play.

Dordt is outscoring teams 81.8-76.9 and outrebound teams 41.4-35.2. Dordt has shot 46.6 percent from the field and allow teams to make 42.9.  

Garrett Franken has scored 12.6 points per game and has 25 made three-point baskets with 7.1 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 11.7 points per game and is making 55.2 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has an 11.6 points per game average to go with 35 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has lifted his scoring average to 10.9 points per game and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.8.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 47 and has made 40.2 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 9.4 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.2.

LAST TIME…

The Flames played Morningside on January 16 and lost 79-63 after getting behind 38-25 at halftime and the lead was 59-44 after three quarters.  Millett scored 19 and Curran added nine.  Millett grabbed eight rebounds in a game where the Flames converted 23-57 field goals and committed 29 turnovers which allowed Morningside nine more field goal tries and 11 more free throw attempts.

The Defender women led start to finish on the way to an 81-66 victory.  The Defenders got 19 points from Erika Feenstra with four rebounds and Rachel Evavold added 15 points and five rebounds. Siennah Stamness contributed 12 points and Annie Rhinesmith added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Morningside defeated Nebraska Christian on Wednesday night in Omaha by a 90-50 score and the Mustangs converted 31-65 shots and 7-24 three-point baskets against the Sentinels. Chris Pendley scored 15 and Devin Jones had 10 while DJ Hanes was held to seven points. Nebraska Christian made 22-67 field goals and 3-23 three-point baskets.

Dordt’s last game was a 95-64 win over Mount Marty that Dordt controlled start to finish with a 6-0 run to start the game. The Defenders were 39-63 from the field and outrebounded the Lancers 42-29. Henrickson scored 19 and was 7-9 from the field and Franken added 14 while Bussard made six in a row to get 12 points and seven rebounds. Van Lingen was the team leader in rebounds with 10 and Franken had seven assists.

THE SERIES…

Dordt beat the College of Saint Mary in Omaha on November 17 by an 82-62 final behind 26 points from Erika Feenstra and 13 by Rachel Evavold. The two had 13 and 11 rebounds each as well while Alyssa Laudato converted 18 for the Flames. Dordt leads the series 8-6.

The Defenders are 5-0 against Nebraska Christian with the meeting happening sporadically.  The two most recent contests were in 2007 and 2011. 

NEXT…

Dordt will host Northwestern on Wednesday night, January 23 and will have Saturday, January 26 off before resuming play on Wednesday, January 30 on the road at Concordia.
