Basketball Travels To Concordia Wednesday

GAMETIME…

Dordt will travel to face Concordia on Wednesday, January 30 in a GPAC women’s game and a non-conference men’s game. The women’s game will start at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00. THE FOE…

The Concordia women are 22-2 overall and 14-2 in the GPAC with losses to Dordt and Morningside this season. Drew Olson’s team has won eight games in a row dating back to the January 2 loss to Dordt in Sioux Center.

The Bulldogs are averaging 89.8 points per game and allow 65.4 while outrebounding teams 41.2-40.1.  Concordia has forced 771 turnovers in 24 games and has given the ball up 433 times.  The Bulldogs are converting field goals at a 43.5 percentage while limiting opponents to 40.1. 

Taylor Cockerill scores 15.6 points per game and has made a team high 47 three-poitn shots and has 50 assists. Philly Lammers averages 14.7 points per game and tops the team in rebounding with a 6.7 average and she has made 60.3 percent of her field goals. Quinn Wragge adds 11.2 points per game and Grace Barry’s scoring average is 10.8 with a team high 137 assists. Eight other Concordia players have played in at least 19 of the Bulldogs’ 24 games this season.

The Concordia men are 13-12 this season and 5-10 in the GPAC but have proven to be a very dangerous team in 2019. The Bulldogs lost back to back games to Dordt and Northwestern in the first week of the year and then reeled off three straight GPAC wins over Hastings, Briar Cliff and Midland.  The Bulldogs are 5-2 since January 9.

Brevin Sloup scores 16.7 points per game and has made a team high 72 three-point baskets and converts 41.9 percent of his three-point attempts. Tanner Shuck has a 14.4 points per game average and has made 70 three-point shots. Sloup has handed out a team high 84 assists through 25 games. Carter Kent averages 9.8 points per game and Chuol Biel is contributing 7.1 points per game with a team high 5.8 rebounds per game.

The Bulldogs are averaging 73.6 points per game while allowing 75.  Concordia also has a 34.9-34.0 rebounding edge on average but has committed 373 turnovers through 25 games to 315 for opponents.  Concordia’s shooting percentage is almost identical to its opponents with 45.0-45.5 overall and 36.6-36.8 on three-point baskets.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are 17-7 overall and 10-6 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern (twice), Dakota Wesleyan (twice) and Morningside (twice). 

Dordt is averaging 83.6 points per game with a 71.1 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.7-36.2 and are converting 44.5 percent of its field goals while allowing 38 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 22.5 points per game with 60.4 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.9 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.8 points per game and she is making 32.3 percent of her three-point shots and has made 41 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 12.5 points per game and 7.1 rebounds and she is making 53.2 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 8.3 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.0 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.4 points per game average. Harmsen leads the team with 53 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 4.9 assists per game. 12 Defenders have played in 18 games or more this season.

The Defender men are 15-9 this season and 7-7 in GPAC play.

Dordt is outscoring teams 83.3-79.0 and outrebound teams 41.5-35.0. Dordt has shot 46.6 percent from the field and allow teams to make 44.0.  

Garrett Franken has scored 13.1 points per game and has 25 made three-point baskets with 7.3 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 12.3 points per game and is making 56.4 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has an 11.1 points per game average to go with 37 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has lifted his scoring average to 11.0 points per game and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.5.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 50 and has made 40.7 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 10.1 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.5.

LAST TIME…

Concordia prevailed in the Concordia Invitational Tournament with a pair of wins over the weekend. The Bulldogs were winners over Concordia (Michigan) on Saturday by a score of 82-56 for the championship. Lammers scored 23 with 14 rebounds and four steals and Quinn Wragge scored 12 and Cockerill added 14. 

The Dordt women were down one to Northwestern on Wednesday night, January 23 with under a minute to go but turnovers thwarted the Defender upset effort as they ended up losing 77-70. Evavold had a team high 16 points with eight rebounds and Bousema came off the bench to score 12 with 10 rebounds. Payton Harmsen and Erika Feenstra each had 12 and Feenstra grabbed seven rebounds. Dordt held a 46-35 rebounding advantage but committed 15 turnovers to 10 for Northwestern.

The Concordia men played in the Concordia Invitational Tournament in Michigan this past weekend and secured third place with a win over Concordia (Illinois) 77-69 on Saturday. Sloup scored 21 and Shuck 20 and Sloup took advantage of 11-13 free throw shooting. Kent added 18 points and had six assists. The Bulldogs also shot 44.4 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from the three-point line.

The Dordt men lost to Northwestern 89-80 after trailing 45-38 at halftime. Bussard came off the bench to score 19 and had seven rebounds. Barkema scored 17 and Franken had 10 points and seven rebounds. Dordt had a 41-34 rebounding edge but gave up 54.1 percent field goal shooting in the loss.

THE SERIES…

The Dordt women came back from a late double digit deficit to win a double overtime game from Concordia 97-92 on January 2. The game was tied 77-77 at the end of regulation and 82-82 at the end of the first overtime. Feenstra scored 32 to lead the Defenders and Stamness scored 17 while Rachel Evavold added 15.  Cockerill topped the Bulldogs with 29 and Barry added 15. Dordt had a 63-47 rebounding advantage and Dordt won in spite of 35 turnovers while the Bulldogs had 24 turnovers.

The Dordt men were 91-73 winners on January 2 in a game played in Sioux Center. Dordt was up 47-40 at halftime and rolled to the 18 point win behind 60 percent field goal shooting. Dordt also had a 34-19 rebounding edge and was led by Zach Bussard’s 20 points and eight rebounds while Chad Barkema added 17. Kent and Sloup each had 15 points in the loss for Concordia.

NEXT…

Dordt returns home to face Doane on Saturday, February 2 before traveling to Jamestown, North Dakota to face the Jimmies on Wednesday, February 6.
