Basketball Hosts Midland For Senior Day

GAMETIME…

Dordt will host Midland on Saturday, February 9 in a GPAC women’s and men’s doubleheader. The women’s game will start at 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at www.kdcr885.com.

SENIOR DAY…

Dordt’s seniors will be recognized for their involvement with the basketball programs today.  Kenzie Bousema will be recognized following the women’s contest while Alec Henrickson, Jacob Lewis and Josh Casemier will be recognized before the men’s game.  

THE FOE…

The Midland women are 14-11 overall and 9-10 in league play and has won three out its last five games.  The Warriors are coached by Shawn Gilbert.

Maddie Egr tops the team with a 14.7 points per game average and she is taking in a team high 7.8 rebounds per game. Amanda Hansen is adding 11.9 points per game and has 22 made three-point baskets and she has 53 assists. Lexis Haase gets 8.9 points per game with 3.8 rebounds. Maddie Meadows has a team high 35 three-point baskets and is one of five players to make 20 or more three-point baskets this season. Hansen has proven to be adept at getting to the free throw line with 150 attempts this season.

Midland is averaging 70.3 points per game and allow 68.8. The Defenders also outrebound teams 35.4-33.6 and convert 38.5 percent of its field goals while allowing teams to make 42.6 percent. The Warriors also make 28.1 percent of their three-point shots but get four more free throw attempts per game than opponents.

The Midland men are 10-16 this season and 5-12 in the league with wins over Doane (twice), Concordia, Mount Marty and Northwestern on head coach Oliver Drake.

The Warriors are converting 78.3 points per game while giving up 83.2.  The Warriors also get outrebounded 31.7-30 and allow teams to make 50.5 percent of their field goal attempts.

Bryce Parsons is scoring 17 points per game with 7.2 rebounds and Malik Martin is good for 13.1 points per game and Bowen Sandquist is at 13.1 points per game as well. Reggie Gradwell adds 10.3 points per game and Isaiah Workman is adding 8.1 points per outing.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are 19-8 overall and 12-7 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern (twice), Dakota Wesleyan (twice), Morningside (twice) and Concordia. 

Dordt is averaging 82.7 points per game with a 70.5 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.6-36.2 and are converting 44.1 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.8 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 22.0 points per game with 59.5 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.7 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.8 points per game and she is making 32.4 percent of her three-point shots and has made 46 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 12.0 points per game and 6.8 rebounds and she is making 52.7 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 7.6 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 5.7 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.8 points per game average while coming off the bench. Harmsen leads the team with 56 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 5.1 assists per game. 12 Defenders have played in 21 games or more this season.

The Defender men are 17-10 this season and 9-8 in GPAC play.

Dordt is outscoring teams 83.2-79.3 and outrebound teams 40.7-35.0. Dordt has shot 47.0 percent from the field and allow teams to make 44.3.  The Defenders have converted 375 free throws out of 511 attempts and have limited opponents’ trips to the free throw line to 373.   

Garrett Franken has scored 13.5 points per game and has 32 made three-point baskets with 6.8 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 12.0 points per game and is making 56 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has an 10.9 points per game average to go with 42 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has an 11.5 scoring average and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.4.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 54 and has made 38.8 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 9.6 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.5. Chandler Brunsting leads the team in assists with 76 and Barkema has 65.

LAST TIME…

Midland needed overtime to slide by Jamestown on Saturday, February 2 in Fremont. Egr scored 31 on 11-21 field goal shooting and she had 12 rebounds with two assists. Lexis Haase added 10 points in a reserve role as the teams needed to play an overtime period after the game was tied 58-58 at the end of regulation. Midland overcame 21-64 shooting to get the win and was outrebounded 33-29.

The Defender women beat Jamestown on Wednesday night after leading start to finish for a 74-56 win.  Dordt’s lead was trimmed to two before pulling away in the final ten minutes.  Feenstra and Rhinesmith each had 16 points and Bousema added 14 off the bench with six rebounds and five steals.

Midland’s men were on the short end of a 92-70 loss to Jamestown on Saturday.  Workman had 20 points and Luke Cadzow added 12 and Dylan Faubel contributed 10.  The Warriors were outrebounded 28-24 and Jamestown made 59.4 percent of its field goal attempts.

The Dordt men needed a three-point shot Garret Franken to give the Defenders the final margin of victory on Wednesday night in Jamestown 97-94. Dordt led by as many as eight in the second half and overcame an early 11-4 deficit. Franken had a career high 27 on 10-15 shooting and Gesink scored 14 while Barkema and Jansma added 13 and 12 each. Henrickson was good for nine points as Dordt made 34-66 field goals and 16-17 free throws.

THE SERIES…

The Defender women needed overtime to beat Midland 94-93 right before Christmas with Annie Rhinesmith leading the team with 26 points and nine assists.  Feenstra added 22 and had seven rebounds and Evavold scored 16 with eight rebounds and four blocked shots.  Midland got 16 each from Egr and Severson and three players came off the Midland bench to score in double figures.

The Dordt men withstood a Midland comeback try and won an 83-80 decision on December 15 with Franken, Jansma and Van Lingen all scoring 18 and Barkema added 14. Parsons topped Midland with 22 and Sandquist chipped in 14.  Dordt converted 56.9 percent of its field goals and had a slight 24-23 rebounding advantage.

Dordt will host Midland on Saturday, February 9 with the women’s game at 2:00 and the men at 4:00.
