Dordt College senior Jenna Stephens will display a collection of oil paintings in her senior art exhibition, open to the public from February 13 to 24. The show will be held in the Campus Center Art Gallery and will include a reception on Friday, February 22, from 7 to 8 p.m., with an artist talk at 7:15 p.m.

The gallery will be filled with a collection of nature-inspired oil paintings. “I enjoy taking a landscape scene and breaking it down, changing what already exists into something new,” says Stephens. “I hope this leads viewers to pause and see creation through a different lens.”

The exhibition will also feature a still-life series of three paintings inspired by Stephens’ life as a newlywed. “This group of paintings captures a glimpse of the joys and challenges and inside-jokes my husband and I share as we continue in this marriage journey together,” she says.

Stephens' first experience using oil paint did not occur until she took Dordt’s Painting 1 course. Her great-grandmother was an oil painter, so the painting style is in her family roots. Additionally, Stephens grew up watching Bob Ross paint “happy trees” on public television.

“Oil paint is challenging, but also really forgiving and rewarding,” says Stephens. “My studies have allowed me to form my own style while drawing on the inspiration I’ve received from so many other artists, God’s creation, and life in general.”

The community is welcome to visit the free exhibit, which is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
