Dordt will travel to Hastings and Doane this weekend for a pair of GPAC softball doubleheaders. The Friday, April 5 games against Hastings will begin at 5:00 and the Saturday doubleheader in Crete, Nebraska gets underway at 11:00.
Hastings is 9-11 this season and 1-3 in the GPAC. Hastings’s win in the GPAC was over Mount Marty on March 31 and the Broncos were swept by Midland.
Alyssa Carter has a team high 25 hits with a .379 batting average and seven doubles and 12 runs batted in. Tatiem Bender bats .367 with 22 hits and Jayda Paul has a .323 batting average and 20 hits with nine runs batted in and two homeruns. Hastings is batting .309 as a team and teams are batting .355 against the Broncos.
Kyra Maguire is 5-1 on the mound with a 5.38 earned runs average and has 25 strikeouts in 40 innings. Josie Bumgardner has 41 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched and she is 2-5 with a 5.92 earned run average.
Doane is 11-15 this season with a 3-3 GPAC record. The Tigers swept Briar Cliff on March 31 and were swept by Concordia and split with Morningside.
Jordyn Stearns is batting .427 with a team high 32 hits and three homeruns with 14 runs batted in. Haileigh Tardiff has 28 hits and a .337 batting average with a team high 18 runs batted in. Jordan Van Roy has a .310 batting average with five triples. The Tigers are batting .303 as a team and teams are batting .314 against Doane.
Josie Schnakenberg is 7-7 with a 1.67 earned run average with 92 innings pitched with 44 strikeouts.
The Defenders are 10-11 this season 4-2 in GPAC play after a pair of losses to Mount Marty on the road.
Rachel Evavold is batting .348 with 16 hits and four doubles and a homerun with a .500 slugging percentage. Hailey Heeringa has 20 hits and is batting .308 with four doubles and Carley De Roin has 17 hits and a .279 batting average and Marissa Vanden Berg has a .250 batting average with 16 hits. Dordt has a .237 batting average while teams are batting .331 against the Defenders.
Tianna Soodsma is 5-2 with a 2.64 earned run average and she has pitched 61 innings with 35 strikeouts. Natalie Vos is 3-3 with a 2.82 earned run average and she has 27 strikeouts but she is currently out with an injury. Rachel Evavold is 2-2 with 11 strikeouts and 21 innings pitched.
IN THE BOOKS…
Rachel Evavold (102) and Hailey Heeringa (101) both joined the 100 hit club last week and Marissa Vanden Berg moved to a tie for 19th all-time in hits with her 119th hit last week and she is now tied with Bethany Dykstra, Karla Vander Leest and Wendy Poppema.
With her win on Wednesday over Dakota Wesleyan Tianna Soodsma earned her 42nd win and is 3rd all-time to Ruth Draayer (1985-88) in 2nd with 47 and Dawn Van Kley (2000-03) is on top of the list with 60.
Dordt swept Hastings on April 21 last year 8-1 and 6-4. Rachel Evavold had three hits and three runs batted in during the 8-1 win and was the winning pitcher while scattering six hits. Dordt overcame a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third and added a run for insurance int eh sixth inning. Soodsma was the winning pitcher and struck out four and walked one.
Dordt swept Doane on April 13 11-10 and 7-6. Dordt won the opener with four runs in the top of the fourth inning and Evavold had a homerun and drove in four. Natalie Vos was the winning pitcher in relief and Soodsma got the save. The Defenders won the nightcap after scoring three in the top of the seventh for a 7-4 lead and then held on as Doane scored two in the bottom of the seventh inning. Vanden Berg had three hits and knocked in two and Soodsma recorded the win while working around 15 hits allowed.
The Defenders will host Midland on April 8 and is scheduled to host Morningside on Friday, April 12 before capping the week with a home date against the College of Saint Mary on April 13.
