Dordt College senior Shauna Vander Kooi will present her senior art exhibition entitled Je Wortels Ontdekken, meaning Discovering Your Roots. The display will be open to the public from April 29 to May 5 in the Campus Center Art Gallery. There will be a gallery reception with refreshments on May 2 from 7 to 8 p.m., with an artist talk at 7:15 p.m.
Vander Kooi says her senior art show displays both of her majors, art and education, together. Throughout the exhibit, she uses multiple mediums in photography, painting, pencil, and design, displaying her expertise in different fields and additionally preparing her to educate others using multiple mediums.
One of her favorite works in the exhibit is called “Word Wall,” which contains ten different Dutch words and phrases along with English translations. “This is an interactive piece for the community to come and connect the phrases together,” says Vander Kooi. “The viewers are able to take a piece of yarn and connect a Dutch word that they think belongs to an English word.”
The artwork also features places important to Vander Kooi. She says, “I’m excited to share about my time in the Netherlands, where all of my works are inspired from, and my passion for travel.”
The community is welcome to visit the free exhibit.
